The brief took on board the uniqueness of the property and the need for the uniforms to complement the Georgian style of the hotel. The uniform style was to be formal, classic and smart, uniting modern comfort with a traditional approach.
Wedgwood Blue
The uniforms take many elements from the Georgian building and its interiors as well as fashion styles of the period. Texture and colour were important factors in achieving the final effect. Fashionizer dyed fabrics two shades of air force blue-grey for all the Front of House outfits. This colour reflects the traditional ceramic designs of the Wedgwood blue porcelain reflecting and complementing the hotel’s traditional paint colours.
Accessorising...
The ceiling rose motif, also used by the Merrion as their logo, is carried into the unique print for ladies blouses and scarves and into the men’s ties, across all departments. Silver buttons using the motif give subtle finishing touches to these very distinctive garments.
A Practical Uniform
The look of the uniforms were not the only consideration; comfort for staff and ease of movement were also very important. Working amongst the low tables in the drawing rooms, the female waitresses require a skirt with enough room to allow them to bend sufficiently to place trays on the tables. An A-line skirt was chosen rather than a straight-line pencil skirt, designed to be long enough to make the staff feel comfortable from the back, and loose enough not to inhibit movement.
Results
The new uniforms have received many positive comments from both guests and staff, much to the delight of the Merrion management. These distinctive, traditional, yet modern uniforms greatly complement the Merrion’s stylish and relaxed image. Together, the combination of the chic uniforms and modern art adorning the walls of this beautifully restored historic building create a very special ambience. The approach has been proven as an effective long-term solution, 6 years on, the uniforms are now considered part of the Merrion identity and one that is recognised by all who visit the hotel.
